As a visual person, making a vision board helps bring my goals, dreams, and ideas to life. By tapping into feelings and emotions, vision boards can be a great tool for helping us achieve goals and aspirations.

The Power of the Brain

Our brains are fascinating organs. Research has found that mental practices and visualization techniques are almost as effective as performing the act itself.

Mental imagery impacts many cognitive processes in the brain: motor control, attention, perception, planning, and memory. Essentially, during visualization, we are training our brain for the reality of actual performance.

It is a practice used by many athletes and chess players. Mental practices can enhance motivation, increase confidence, improve motor performance, and prime your brain for success! And the more you do, the more consistently you can see your goals come to fruition.

In fact, a study looked at brain patterns in weight lifters. The study found that the patterns activated when they lifted hundreds of pounds were similarly activated when they only imagined lifting the weight.

Creating a Vision Board

A vision board is a collage of images and words representing a person’s wishes and goals, intended to serve as inspiration and motivation.

Here’s the one rule for making a vision board: there are no rules! It allows for a lot of freedom and creativity.

I like to use a cork board, but you can also use a poster board or canvas. Use one board or divide each subject onto its own board.

Or, instead of making your vision board on a poster or arranging it on a canvas, use the refrigerator, a wall, or door you see frequently.

Getting Started

First, think about your goals, dreams, intentions, and ambitions. What do you want to accomplish? Are these long-term or short-term goals?

Consider topics such as relationships, career, finances, health and wellness, education, home, travel, etc. What are your specific goals within these subjects?

What are your hobbies? Think about what makes you happy, and how you want to better yourself. Always take your morals and values into account.

Set Goals

Maybe some of your goals include:

  • Weight loss
  • Regular exercise
  • Healthy eating
  • Reading more
  • Home improvement
  • Travel
  • Learning something new
  • Personal growth

Now be specific with what you want to accomplish. Some examples might be:

  • Lose 20 pounds by December 1
  • Exercise for at least 30 minutes, 5 times per week
  • Hire a personal trainer
  • Eat 100% plant based meals every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
  • Try one new vegetable every week
  • Make 2 new recipes every month
  • Try one new food at least every 2 weeks
  • Read something educational for 30 minutes every day
  • Start learning Italian
  • Have weekly date night with spouse
  • Work towards getting a promotion by next year
  • Find a new job
  • Save money for a new car
  • Travel to 2 new countries by the end of next year (might need to adjust this goal with travel bans! 😳)
  • Volunteer weekly
  • Take an online class
  • Learn to sew
  • Keep a journal of things I am grateful for

Get Creative

Next, compile pictures and printouts from magazines, Google searches, or your own personal photographs. These are symbols and representations of your goals; they act as visualization tools and remind you of your goals. Collect your favorite quotes, affirmations, and motivational words.

Print out specific goals. Create a checklist. Include an inspiring note from a loved one.

Make sure it’s full of positivity and motivates you. Be creative. Use what speaks to you and what inspires you. Include graphics that are colorful and visually grab your attention.

Be Inspired!

Place the vision board where you will see it every day. By frequently looking at your goals, you are more likely to achieve them. Use it as a powerful motivator.

Give yourself rewards for achieving small accomplishments along the journey to the final goal. For example: for every 10 pounds you lose, buy yourself a new article of clothing.

When transitioning to a plant based diet, a vision board is a great way to help keep you on track. Set specific goals and work towards them every week. Before you know it, you’ll be living a plant-based life and reaping the benefits that accompany it! 🌱
